WO in Motion

A good look at Winter Offensive. Note Pete Shelling (l) and Conscript Emeritus Scott "Muzzlehead" Calkins (r) in the right foreground, Aaron Krebs (l) and District Commissar Chris Baer (r) getting up from their annual Saturday grudge match, and Bob O'Connor and John Slotwinski to the right of them. MMP's Perry Cocke patrols the room in the background, wearing that red hat of his.

Stephen Frum's Descent into Counter Storage Madness

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
Past Conscripts tournament champion Stephen Frum pretends that he understands Bill Stoppel's counter storage system and just grabs any counters he can find for their match.

John Gorkowski and Opponent

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
"Why, yes, I do know how to say 'Bounding First Fire' in Hindi and Polish! You'd be surprised how often I'm asked that," notes John Gorkowski, left, to his opponent, whose name we are uncertain of.

Marc Genberg and Bob O'Connor

Reigning club style maestro Bob O'Connor, right, makes a move for his coffee, hoping Marc Genberg won't poke him with those blue tweezers again.

The Proud Father

There's smug, and then there's Jack Daniels, head craftsman at the ASL woodshop.

'I could so build one of those if I wanted to!'

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
Not even Journal #6 was as big a splash at WO as Jack Daniel's custom built hinged map frame, replete with matching dice towers, counter holders, and miniaturized IFT charts. Note the horror on Bill Stoppel's face as he stands over Jack Daniels' shoulder, struck with the sudden thought that his RAACO storage system is no longer the coolest bit of ASL gear at Winter Offensive . . .

Strange Reflections

Looking into the plexiglass at just the right angle, John Slotwinski (left) is able to count his nose hairs. Jack Daniels looks on with interest, confident that he going to win the over-under bet on the actual number.

More Complicated than the Panji Rules

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: John Slotwinski and Chris Baer
John Slotwinski puts his wallet away after paying off his bet with Jack Daniels, while Doug Bush peruses the operator's manual for the wooden monstrosity. Zeke Crater merely looks on, glad that they don't have things like that in Charlottesville.

Scott Blanton, Matt Kirschenbaum, Ken Mioduski, and Locke Monroe

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
Following club etiquette, Conscripts Matt Kirschenbaum (right foreground) and Ken Mioduski (right background) sit on the same side of the table as each other, the better to hand each other extra counters under the table. Scott Blanton (left foreground) and Locke Monroe (left background) are none the wiser. John Stadick (far left background) plays against Matt Noah, far from all the riff raff they let into WO these days . . .

Doug Bush and Pierce Mason

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
"I'm telling you, Pierce, there's a rule in here that lets me beat you!" insists Doug Bush as he and his former regular opponent down in Savannah, SC, Pierce Mason, get in a reunion match of some scenario using the Primasole Bridge map from the new Journal.

Roni Hourihane and Arnhem on the Brain

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
Roni Hourihane seems lost in thought over a copy of Monty's Gamble: Market Garden as he ponders how much better a tactician he is than Monty ever was.

Brian Youse

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: John Slotwinski
Brian Youse looks comfortable in front of the camera, even while playing a close match of MG:MG. Then again, all of the MMP guys are used to the paparazzi.

Monty Gambled, Forrest Didn't

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
Conscript Forrest Atterberry, seated left, in first round Monty's Gamble: Market Garden tournament action, facing off against his able opponent, Arnie Shimo. Roni Hourihane (left) and Adam Starkweather, (right), provide the play by play. Our congratulations to Forrest for taking the inaugural WO MG:MG title.

The Plea

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
"I'm telling you, that LOS is clear!" pleads Joe Jackson, left, while Neil Stanhagen demonstrates by just how much the line of sight is blocked.

Smilin' Jim Bishop

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
Conscript Jim Bishop had so much fun at Winter Offensive this year, he's already made plans to attend again.

The Leader Board

Credit: Toni Genberg; Caption: Chris Baer
MMP's Perry Cocke fulfills one of his duties as WO Tournament Director, updating the Leader Board.

A Portrait of the ASL'er as a Young Man

The quintessence of Winter Offensive. Aaron Krebs, eight hours into a scenario.
