With the success of last year's inaugural Iron Conscript tournament, which saw twenty participants play a ton and a half of scenarios, we've decided to retain the format for this, the seventh annual Conscripts Club Tournament.
The format is simple (and explained fully in the rules) -- the best ten match record wins. It doesn't matter if you go 0-10 and there's someone with a 9-0 record at the end of October -- 0-10 beats 9-0 every time. This tournament is intended first and foremost to get you playing ASL, and the slightly unorthodox format prevents early losses from dropping people out of contention.
Behold, the Iron Conscript Tournament . . .

Style
"We all want to win, but the true loser is the one who does not aspire to beauty."
-- Jorge Valdano, quoted in Phil Ball, White Storm: 100 Years of Real Madrid
The District Commissar's Style Points Award makes a fifth appearance as an adjunct to the main show. Style Points will be awarded both for inspired and elegantly gonzo play (though be warned that the standards are high for such points) and also based upon Scenario Selection Prowess, with points awarded for playing scenarios that fit as many of the General Scenario Style Point options as possible. All listed style points are cumulative, so it's quite possible to gain two or more Style Points with a single scenario choice -- indeed, last year's Style Maven, Bob O'Connor, took the prize by averaging nearly 4 points per scenario. It's equally possible that some of the Style Points are in fact impossible to fulfill via existing scenarios -- but then, is anything truly impossible in the quest for style?
You must claim Style Points to be awarded them -- though his knowledge is indeed vast and awe-inspiring, the District Commissar lacks encyclopedic knowledge of every scenario ever published. When contacting the with a Style Point claim, please provide a break-down of the points you are claiming.

Featuring ten rounds over ten months, the 2005 Iron Conscript Tournament rewards perseverence above all else. Simply put, the best ten-match record after ten months (January to October, 2005) takes the crown. If you go 1-9 and no one else plays ten matches, you win.
The first tie-breaker will go to the person who has played against the most different opponents, with best combined ladder total of said opponents being the secondary tie-breaker.
All matches will be self-arranged by tournament participants and must be pre-designated as such between the participants. Your opponent in a tournament match must be another tournament participant, and further, all tournament matches must be for ladder points. The intent is for you to play as many different opponents as possible, and the (Chris Baer) reserves the right to intervene if an excessive number of tournament matches are played against the same opponent. Additionally, you may only play a given scenario once per tournament.
Because this is a self-scheduled tournament, you may play more than one match per month, in order to better accomodate the needs of your schedule. The only restriction is that you may not have played more matches than the sum of the "match month" plus two, as illustrated below:
| Month | Max. # of Matches |
| January | 3 |
| February | 4 |
| March | 5 |
| April | 6 |
| May | 7 |
| June | 8 |
| July | 9 |
| August | 10 |
| September | 10 |
| October | 10 |
If your opponent for a tournament match bails or flakes out on you, please inform the . However, because it's a freakin' ten month tournament, the will not impose a penalty or award any forfeits or draws. Just play someone else, and don't wait until October to get your last few matches in.
No tournament matches may be played before January 2005. The tournament will end (no execptions, no how, no way) on October 31, 2005.
The entry fee will be $5, as in years past, with all fees turned into tournament prizes. We will have prizes for 1st-3rd place and a Sportsmanship Award. Given that we lack a game store "home" at present, the prizes will be in the form of cash. In years past, Multi-Man Publishing has provided us with a prize as well, and we appreciate their continued support of our club and the tournament.
The District Commissar's Style Award is also back, with General Scenario Style Point table packed full of style point goodness, available below.
We also have a new prize this year, the ASL Apprentice Award, kindly sponsored by last year's third place finisher, Marc Genberg. This $15 prize will go to the highest placing participant who has two or fewer years of ASL experience under his or her belt. Of course, if said person wins one of the 1st-3rd place prizes, we'll give it to the next highest placing participant with two or fewer years of play.
To sign up for the tournament, please contact the and he'll make the necessary arrangements.
The Iron Conscript mailing list is currently offline. I am currently investigating other options for tournament participants to communicate with one another for purposes of arranging matches and trash talking.
We will accept tournament participants throughout the entire length of the tournament -- if you want to try to play ten matches in a month, hey, it's your money.
If you have any questions, concerns, or problems, please don't hesitate to contact the .
You may pay your tournament entry fee either in person at a club meeting, at Winter Offensive, or using PayPal (please add an extra dollar if paying via PayPal tags a fee on all my transactions with them). Contact the for information on paying via PayPal.
