In the first five years of its existence, the Annual Conscripts Club Tournament went through numerous structural changes, from a small, three round effort to an unwieldy point-based system to the most recent five round, (effectively) single elimination contest. In keeping with this tradition of mutablilty, the Club Tournament changes once more for the 2004 campaign.
Given that Conscripts encompasses a wide geographical area, scheduling a tournament becomes, at times, an exercise in impending baldness, given the amount of hair pulling involved in getting guys who live in far off Maryland to play guys who live in far off Virginia, and vice versa. Too, schedules being what they are in this area, even the best laid plans gang oft agley, leading to fixture pile-ups and unplayed matches. The single elimination aspect also sat poorly with us, as the main intent of the Club Tournament is to encourage play, and lots of it. Well, no more.
Behold, the Iron Conscript Tournament . . .

Style
"We all want to win, but the true loser is the one who does not aspire to beauty."
-- Jorge Valdano, quoted in Phil Ball, White Storm: 100 Years of Real Madrid
The District Commissar's Style Points Award returns for its fourth season. As in years past, Style Points will be awarded both for inspired and elegantly gonzo play and also based upon Scenario Selection Prowess, with points awarded for playing scenarios that fit as many of the General Scenario Style Point options as possible. All listed style points are cumulative, so it's quite possible to gain two or more Style Points with a single scenario choice -- indeed, winners in years past needed to average almost four points per round to prance off with the crown. It's equally possible that some of the Style Points are in fact impossible to fulfill via existing scenarios -- but is anything truly impossible in the quest for style?
You must claim Style Points to be awarded them -- though his knowledge is indeed vast and awe-inspiring, the District Commissar lacks encyclopedic knowledge of every scenario ever published. When contacting the with a Style Point claim, please provide a break-down of the points you are claiming.

Featuring ten rounds over ten months, the 2004 Iron Conscript Tournament rewards perseverence above all else. Simply put, the best ten-match record after ten months (January to October, 2004) takes the crown. If you go 1-9 and no one else plays ten matches, you win. The first tie-breaker will go to the person who has played against the most different opponents, with best combined ladder total of said opponents being the secondary tie-breaker.
All matches will be self-arranged by tournament participants and must be pre-designated as such. Your opponent in a tournament match must be another tournament participant, and further, all tournament matches also qualify for ladder points. The intent is for you to play as many different opponents as possible, and the (Chris Baer) reserves the right to intervene if an excessive number of tournament matches are played against the same opponent. Additionally, you may only play a given scenario once per tournament.
Because this is a self-scheduled tournament, you may play more than one match per month, in order to better accomodate the needs of your schedule. The only restriction is that you may not have played more matches than the sum of the "match month" plus two, as illustrated below:
| Month | Max. # of Matches |
| January | 3 |
| February | 4 |
| March | 5 |
| April | 6 |
| May | 7 |
| June | 8 |
| July | 9 |
| August | 10 |
| September | 10 |
| October | 10 |
If your opponent for a tournament match bails or flakes out on you, please inform the . However, because it's a freakin' ten month tournament, the will not impose a penalty or award any forfeits or draws. Just play someone else, and don't wait until October to get your last few matches in.
No tournament matches may be played before January 2004. The tournament will end (no execptions, no how, no way) on October 31, 2004.
The entry fee will be $5, as in years past, with all fees turned into tournament prizes. We will have prizes for 1st-3rd place, including a copy of MMP's Monty's Gamble: Market Garden area move game generously donated by MMP, and a Sportsmanship Award. Given that we lack a game store "home" at present, it is quite likely that the prizes will be in the form of cash this year.
The District Commissar's Style Award is also back, but without the round themes (alas) that accounted for much of its inestimable popularity. Instead, there is an extended General Scenario Style Point table packed full of style point goodness, available below.
To sign up for the tournament, you must subscribe to the Iron Conscript mailing list (using your preferred tournament contact e-mail address) at http://dcconscripts.org/mailman/listinfo/iron_conscript_dcconscripts.org. Your subscription serves as your tournament entry. The resulting tournament mailing list will be used for tournament administration and tournament match requests only. We will accept tournament participants throughout the entire length of the tournament -- if you want to try to play ten matches in a month, hey, it's your money.
If you have any questions, concerns, or problems with the mailing list/entry combo, please don't hesitate to contact the -- I'm more than happy to manually add you to the tournament roster.
You may pay your tournament entry fee either in person at a club meeting or using PayPal (please add an extra dollar if paying via credit card, since PayPal tags a fee on credit card transactions). Contact the for information on paying via PayPal.
